History of Jumble Puzzles

In the late 1940s, Martin Naydel developed a puzzle called Jumble. It started as "Scramble." In 1962, Henri Arnold and Bob Lee took over the feature and ran it for more than 30 years. David L. Hoyt and Jeff Knurek continue to maintain Jumble today (as of 2013). The daily and Sunday puzzles from this game appear in more than 600 publications in the United States and abroad.

The most current syndicated version, which is also known as Jumble in daily newspapers (under the official name Jumble–That Scrambled Word Game), features four basic anagrams, two of five letters and two of six, followed by a clue and a set of blank spaces into which the answer to the clue may be inserted. The solution to the clue is usually some sort of pun. A three-letter word is used in place of a four-letter word in the "kids version" of the puzzle.
